Terrain Storage - part 2. Let the Shrubbery Gather!

Whoops ... That took a lot longer than I had thought it would.

Life's been a little bit of a roller coaster, with more low energy days than usual. On the days where I finally had a bit of energy I made the most of it. Bit of a boom and bust cycle started to form. Good job I spotted what was happening and focused on enjoying the energy days while not overdoing it. Being more self-aware is something I really need to focus on.

So I managed to finish the storage project and here it is:

So I somehow misjudged quite how many slots i needed to cut and how long cutting each one by hand would take. Though after digging out some of the shrubbery I have already started I definitely make use of it.

First challenge was finding a box without a cracked or damaged lid. Avoiding dust accumulating on your shrubbery/terrain is one of the benefits of making the effort in the first place.

Now I could just chuck all the shrubbery in the box and call it a day. Though that would mean the shrubbery would get damaged. So instead I chose to make stackable trays with slots cut in to allow storage with some protection from getting bashed about.

The plan was to have 2 sheets of Foamboard (foam sandwiched between 2 card layers) glued together with slots cut in the upper sheet for the shrubbery to slot into. This was a mistake I ended up regretting when it came time to cut the slots into the upper sheets. Cutting many slots into the Foamboard was much more difficult and time consuming than I had expected using a craft knife.

If I was to do this again the upper sheet would be plain foam sheets instead. Using a hot wire cutter to blitz through slot cutting process instead.

Just make sure you keep the offcuts as you can use then to make pillars to hold the upper sheet up off the lower one.

I have started many a shrubbery project and all of the finished ones have found homes elsewhere. So I think I need to get the ones that have been partly done painted and make some more.

The top sheet fits what I would class as bushes and ground cover for 28mm scaled models. The bottom sheet has enough height to store bigger bushes and short trees.

I'll have to make another to store bigger trees with only a single layer.

So what's next? It looks like shrubbery is on the horizon especially some desert flavoured as I've also picked up a wild west game called Dead Mans Hand.

There's the opportunity to look at some buildings that could fit both the deserts of the Wild West and North Africa. Adobe buildings with mud bricks and plastered finishes.

I've also got hold of some prerelease 3d prints of Minotaur flavoured Space Marines. I'm no Picasso but they are going to be fun to paint.
